Through research and development in information technology, applied mathematics, and statistics, ITL supports the development and advancement of measurement science, standards infrastructure, and computer technology. Primary focus areas include networking and communications, computer security, software engineering and human interaction with computers.
Examples of Research Activities: Computer network modeling, biometrics for computer access and security, cryptography, computer forensics, trustworthy software, software quality testing, digital data retrieval and preservation, bioinformatics, data mining, machine learning, information visualization, and image analysis.
Relevant Academic Interests and Coursework: Computer science, mathematics, and statistics.
The Summer High School Intern Program (SHIP) is a NIST-wide summer intern program for students who will have finished their junior or senior year of high school by the start of the program and are interested in scientific research only. All other high school applicants who do not want a summer research position should go to NIST Student Employment Programs for information on other NIST Programs. Students selected for this competitive volunteer program will participate in cutting-edge research at NIST, and will work closely with NIST staff scientists and engineers on a specific research problem.
During their tenure at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD, the students will not be paid, and are expected to provide their own housing and transportation. The program requires a commitment for a contiguous 8-week period (nominal hours of 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM). This program is open only to United States citizens.
The following links will provide more information about SHIP:
The online application, including letters of recommendation, is accepting applications only between January 1 and February 14, 2023.
The 8-week program is tentatively scheduled to start on Tuesday, June 21, 2023. The SHIP poster sessions (which all students are required to attend and participate in) will be held August 9-11, 2023 for Gaithersburg, MD/ August 10-11, 2023 for Boulder, CO.
If you have any additional questions, please write to ship@nist.gov .
The Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) is one of NIST’s six research laboratories that focuses on IT measurements, testing, and standards, and is a globally recognized and trusted source of high-quality, independent, and unbiased research and data. As a world-class measurement and testing laboratory encompassing a wide range of areas of computer science, mathematics, statistics, and systems engineering, ITL’s research program supports NIST’s mission to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and related technology.
ITL’s strategy is to maximize the benefits of information technology (IT) to society through a balanced IT measurement science and standards portfolio of three major activities: 1) fundamental research in mathematics, statistics, and IT; 2) applied IT research and development; and 3) standards development and technology transfer. ITL has identified five priority areas through which ITL research will maximize the benefits of IT and metrology to society: 1) cybersecurity, 2) the Internet of Things, 3) artificial intelligence, 4) reliable computing, and 5) future computing technologies.
ITL works with industry and other agencies to develop IT standards through standards developing organizations (SDOs) and has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a standards developer since October 1984. ITL maintains a list of its present participation in voluntary standards activities.
